Rep. Mark Kennedy’s (R-Minn.) decision to run for the Senate created an open seat in Minnesota’s 6th District. Bachmann began dating her husband in 1978 as they worked together on Jimmy Carter’s presidential campaign. From 1988 to 1993, Bachmann was a U.S. Treasury Department attorney in St. Paul. She then quit her job to become a full-time mother. Bachmann is a vocal born-again Christian whose campaign slogan pronounces her to be “a woman with a mission.” She strongly endorses bans on gay marriage and supports the war in Iraq.
