Strib Video of Michele Bachmann at the St Cloud Rotary Club

"A trap was laid....."

ST. CLOUD -- Appealing to business leaders and party faithful for support, Rep. Michele Bachmann retreated Tuesday from her televised claim that Barack Obama "may have anti-American views," but also asserted that "a trap was laid" that prompted her remark.

While Bachmann was on the defensive, her political problems invigorated the supporters of her DFL challenger Elwyn Tinklenberg at a packed town hall meeting in Blaine Tuesday night, as the race gained national attention and Tinklenberg reaped extra campaign dollars.

"Thank you, Michele!" one man shouted, setting off gales of laughter.

Bachmann, a Republican, defended herself during campaign stops at a lumber company, at a GOP campaign storefront and before the Rotary Club of St. Cloud. In her talk to the Rotary Club, she blamed Chris Matthews, the host of MSNBC's "Hardball," for setting the stage for her controversial comments about Obama.

Meanwhile commenters at the Strib are highly critical of them missing the boat:

House Un-American Activities Committee
Rep. Bachmann is vying to be the new chair. What kind of newspaper writes an story without getting to the main point? The quote by Rep. Bachmann that really upset everyone I've spoken to about this was, "The news media should do a penetrating expose and take a look. I wish they would, I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out are they are pro-America or anti-America." Are you or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party? It's McCarthy-ism all over again.

I encourage people to continue writing letters to the editor of the Star Tribune (opinion@startribune.com) to make this point. Maybe they will finally get it through their thick heads.

I really liked this comment:

Gitmo them godless liberals!
Question: What's the difference between Michele Bachmann and Joseph McCarthy? Answer: Lipstick
