Elwyn Tinklenberg has already said he will not do any "negative advertising" in this race. I hope that doesn't mean he won't do contrast ads that will show why he's a better candidate than Michele Bachmann. The only reason he is getting money from all over the country is because people want to defeat Michele Bachmann and what she stands for.
Two years ago, Patty Wetterling and the DCCC chose the wrong issues to advertise about, and used misleading ads against Michele Bachmann. There was no reason to do so since all one has to do with Bachmann is use Bachmann's own words - and advertising - against her. In addition, Wetterling's idiotic campaign manager returned a check to the Human Rights Campaign. Elwyn Tinklenberg at his opening press conference said he supported the Federal Marriage Amendment - then later said he supported civil unions. Wetterling used Tinklenberg's support for the FMA against him at the Democratic Convention. When Tinklenberg ran this time, he took a very different position on this - he opposed the Federal Marriage Amendment, and supported civil unions. He also committed to co-sponsoring repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell if elected.
Here's the interview I did with El Tinklenberg covering social issues.
Avidor's "Gone Fission" ad, and Political Muse's "Sunshine and Lollypops" ad are both better than I saw coming out of the DCCC and Patty Wetterling two years ago. Elwyn Tinklenberg's ad: "Have You Seen Her?" is in my view brilliant and catchy - but could be interpreted as negative. In my view, it is merely telling the truth.
The Death Penalty for Homosexuals sign that was prominent at the 2004 Bachmann amendment rally should be included in one of the DCCC ads. The point to be made there is that Michele Bachmann was not promoting "traditional marriage" but rather was promoting hate. This type of ad would help Tinklenberg in areas like the Stillwater and Woodbury area where people are more socially moderate.
The real challenge for Tinklenberg will be in what we call "the Bachmann Triangle" - Sherburne County. |
