Michele Bachmann's Ethics Problems

Michele Bachmann has a history of abusing her office

By Karl Bremer

Last week’s ethics hearing on a Minnesota state senator brought back memories of one of Michele Bachmann’s less-than-finer moments in her unremarkable senate career.

Let’s take a trip in the Wayback Machine for a look at yet another one of Bachmann’s ethical lapses.

Back in 2005, State Senator Michele Bachmann was caught using the Senate chambers as a backdrop for a testimonial she made for a commercial business. That prompted the State Senate to amend its rules to prohibit such crass commercialism of the Senate chambers. The business for which Bachmann filmed the commercial endorsement was a public relations/media firm that worked for Bachmann on her “Defense of Marriage” legislation that went nowhere.

Senate Majority Leader John Hottinger (DFL-Mankato) delivered a smackdown to Bachmann on the Senate floor when he proposed—and then later withdrew—an amendment to the Senate rules prohibiting commercial use of the Senate chambers.

“When I was first alerted to that (Bachmann’s commercial), I was amazed. I was incredulous that someone would think that was an appropriate usage of the senate chambers,” said Hottinger on March 5, 2005. “I talked to a number of people and I found no one—no one—who would think it would be a proper thing to use the senate chamber to make a television ad, or an internet ad for a commercial company.”

But Hottinger then withdrew his amendment, because he wanted to avoid “filling the rules with things that are so obvious as this.” He noted that Senate rules already prohibit using Senate hearing rooms for commercial purposes.

“I don’t know why Sen. Bachmann chose to be using the senate chambers to advance a commercial business purpose when it’s barred by our rules in hearing rooms. I mean, how much common sense does it take to understand if you can’t use the less-than-sacred hearing rooms for commercial business purposes, then you shouldn’t be using the Senate chamber for commercial business purposes?” Hottinger asked.

He continued to lambaste Bachmann for her lack of judgment.

“She didn’t bother to ask anyone ‘Is this within the rules of the Senate, within the decorum, within the history, within the traditions, within the standards?’ She didn’t ask. And had she asked, of course she’d been told ‘No, we don’t use that kind of commercial purpose to promote some group that we support for financial gain … It shows how far we have stooped to think we need to have rules on something so obvious and so clear.”

Even Sen. Mady Reider (R-Shoreview), normally a faithful ally of Bachmann’s in the Senate, conceded that Bachmann’s abuse of the Senate chambers was in bad taste.

“Good taste would probably say we not use it for commercial purposes,” Reider testified.

Bachmann, of course, made no apologies for turning the Senate chambers into a commercial soundstage. In fact, using her own bizarre logic, she denied it was even a commercial.

“This was not a commercial as I had understood it. This was going to be a video ad that the company has on their website, and that’s what this was about,” Bachmann told her colleagues.

Instead, Bachmann once again played the victim card and claimed she was being vilified for supporting Minnesota businesses and jobs.

Hottinger saw through Bachmann’s smokescreen, however, noting that the commercial Bachmann made was for work the company did on Bachmann’s failed legislation.

“It’s not about jobs or economic development. If that’s the argument, any company can come in here and make a commercial.”

Hottinger’s amendment was reintroduced by Sen. Dave Kleis (R-St. Cloud) and passed on a 58-7 vote. Bachmann voted for the measure, despite her refusal to admit wrongdoing.

Bradlee Dean Responds to Critics

And it's pretty bizarre... listen:

UPDATE: Excellent blog post by Ray Garton about Bradlee Dean at God is for Suckers! Here is an excerpt about Michele Bachmann and Bradlee Dean:

YCRBYCH has an annual fund-raiser which is aided by some powerful friends in some high places.

One of the group’s biggest, most passionate and valuable supporters is Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota. Bachmann, a Republican, was elected in 2006 and sits on the Financial Services Committee. She and her husband Marcus own a mental healthcare practice in Stillwater called Bachmann and Associates, Inc., and, according to her bio on her website, in addition to their five children, “the Bachmanns have opened their home to 23 foster children.”

In that entire bio, not one word is mentioned about Bachmann’s religious beliefs — which, frankly, is as it should be. But personal religious beliefs are such a significant part of Bachmann’s politics that leaving them out of her bio is as deceptive a tactic as those used by Bradlee Dean, because in the last four years, Bachmann has proven herself a religious zealot who uses her office to advance a theocratic Christian agenda. And that agenda includes getting Bradlee Dean and You Can Run But You Cannot Hide, Inc. into public schools where it will have access to your children’s minds and can use its thought reform techniques to influence them. According to Bachmann, this is a good thing — a very good thing.

Bachmann attends the group’s fundraisers and helps them raise money to do what they do. At a YCRBYCH fundraiser at a Minneapolis hotel in October of 2006, she gave an impassioned prayer to her god on behalf of Bradlee Dean and his group. It was a long prayer, but if you want to hear the whole thing, you can listen to it here. Here are a few highlights:
Lord, I thank you for what you have done at this ministry … how you are going to advance them from 260 schools a year, Lord, to 2,600 schools a year. … Lord, we ask thy faith that you would expand this ministry beyond anything the originators of this ministry could begin to think or imagine. Lord, the day is at hand! We are in the last days! The day is at hand, Lord, when your return will0 become nigh. Pour a double blessing, Lord, a triple blessing on this ministry.

Remember, this is a United States Representative openly praising, through a prayer, a group that calls the execution of gay people “moral,” that deceptively weasels its way into public schools to engage in activities that violate the Constitution and feed outright lies to students. Is there a chance that Bachmann is not aware of the group’s activities? Surely she cannot support the idea of violating the Constitution by teaching Christianity in the public school system.

At that same YCRBYCH fundraiser in 2006, Bachmann complained that public schools “are teaching children that there is separation of church and state, and I am here to tell you that is a myth. That’s not true. And they (YCRBYCH) explain to children in the public school system what a myth that is. And that’s what I love about this ministry. … We want kids to come to the truth and that’s why this ministry is so absolutely vital. We need them in every public school classroom across the state to tell young people, ‘You Can Run But You Cannot Hide.’” (The emphasis is mine.)

Bachmann was unable to attend the group’s 2009 fundraiser, called “Appeal to Heaven,” because she was busy saving the country from healthcare reform, but she did send a videotaped message. “
It a tough job that you do, but someone has to do it,” she said in the prerecorded message. “I thank god that he has given you the strength and the resolve to fight for our timeless values. … We can’t overlook the outright rejection of god in the public school classroom, and the outright scorn of Christianity in our public square. Moral relativism is exalted and faith in Christ is derided.”

The program included a sermon by Dean in which he called his followers to war:

We are a Christian nation regardless if you like that or not. The Bible says we are called as ministers of the flame, the fire. We are called to war. We are called to fight the good fight of faith. In other words, what I’m trying to say is, I’m a trouble maker, okay? It’s time to say, “We are done complaining, and it’s time to start fighting.” But you say, “I don’t know what what I’m going to look like with a sword in my hand.” You are going to look great! … We are not a land of liberals. We hear this all the time. Why don’t you just call them for what they are? Criminals. Why don’t you just call them for what they are? Socialists. They are contrary to our Constitution. … We are not a land of homosexuals. God said “Adam and Eve” not “Adam and Steve.”

This is not too surprising when you consider the fact that Bachmann and Associates, Inc., the “counseling center” owned by Michele and her husband Dr. Marcus Bachmann, has received nearly $30,000 in state funds since 2007. That’s troubling in light of how Dr. Bachmann himself describes the center and the work it does during a 2008 broadcast on KKMS radio (MP3): “We are distinctly a Christian counseling agency here in the Twin Cities. We have 27 Christian counselors, Christ-centered, very strong in our understanding of who the almighty counselor is, and as we rely on god’s word and the almighty counselor, we have the opportunity to change people’s lives.”

Ray Garton goes on to describe MN GOP gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer & YCRBTCH:

Apparently, Michele Bachmann has no problem with the unconstitutional appropriation of tax dollars, so it’s not surprising that she supports it in the case of YCRBYCH. But Bachmann is not alone in supporting the group.

That same 2009 “Appeal to Heaven” fundraiser for YCRBYCH was attended by Minnesota State Representative and 2010 Minnesota Republica-endorsed gubenatorial candidate Tom Emmer. However, Emmer did not mention his attendance at the fundraiser in a list of appearances that week that was emailed to supporters. To its article about Emmer’s appearance at the YCRBYCH fundraiser, the Minnesota Independent added this update:

Emmer’s campaign told the Minnesota Independent, “Rep. Tom Emmer stopped by the event for a social hour before the dinner and program. The program is headquartered out of Wright County which is Rep. Emmer’s county and has many supporters in Tom’s legislative district. It was not mentioned in the campaign update because it was not a campaign event.”

While it’s true that the YCRBYCH fundraiser was not a “campaign event,” that only underscores the fact that Emmer was there because he supports the work of Bradlee Dean and the group! Emmer was there to throw his support behind a group that calls the president and everyone who supports him, along with all Americans who happen to hold liberal views, and all homosexuals criminals. And that wasn’t the end of Emmer’s support of YCRBYCH.

It's a very long and detailed post, but I urge everyone to read it.

Here is the long version of Bachmann speaking at a YCRBYCH fundraising event:

Are State Payments to Bachmann Clinic Unconstitutional?

Andy Birkey investigates at MnIndy:

Bachmann and Associates, Inc., a counseling center that receives state funds and is owned by Rep. Michele Bachmann and her husband, Dr. Marcus Bachmann, uses counseling methods steeped in fundamentalist Christianity, raising questions about its use of taxpayer money.

Founded in 2003, Bachmann’s clinic has taken in nearly $30,000 in state funds since 2007. Dr. Bachmann has said publicly that God heals people at his clinic and that Jesus Christ is the “Almighty Counselor.”

“We are distinctly a Christian counseling agency here in the Twin Cities,” he told KKMS radio in 2008. “We have 27 Christian counselors, Christ-centered, very strong in our understanding of who the Almighty Counselor is, and as we rely on God’s word and the Almighty Counselor, we have the opportunity to change people’s lives.”

He continued, “God heals people and if we give opportunity, if we are a willing vessel and we go according to what God’s word is, it works.”

Bradlee Dean Says Andy Birkey "Habitually Falsifies our Message"

Bradlee Dean defends his anti-gay statements in a blog post on his website.

There is a journalist in the Twin Cities – Mr. Andy Birkey of the Minnesota Independent -- who habitually falsifies our message – a message that has a long and consistent history. For years we have spoken out about the sinfulness of the gay life style without ever suggesting that gays should be subject to any kind of repression, let alone violence, either by the state or any individual or group. We have made the Christian position clear and stated it consistently over the years: Homosexuals are sinners who, like all sinners, need to be loved and respected as human beings by the church with a view to their redemption and transition -- just as heterosexuals who engage in fornication and adultery need to be admonished because of God’s love and the love he has given us for ourselves and others as sinners in need of a Redeemer (1 Corinthians 6:9). The media in Minnesota, even nationally, is very familiar with our message and its consistency. And so there is no excuse for lying about it -- falsifying it by removing it from its total history and context. Birkey in particular is guilty of twisting the meaning of our ministry and suggesting that it is associated with people and ideologies we have specifically repudiated.

Andy Birkey responds at The Minnesota Independent with quotes and and the audio segment. Birkey also points out that Bradlee Dean does not mention the broadcast where Bradlee Dean praised the arrest and incarceration of a gay couple in Malawi.

Bradlee Dean goes on to say his weekly tirades against homosexulty are really about his love for homosexuals:

Let me make this perfectly clear -- again. We are opposed to the state, in any country, no matter what its religious tradition, in executing homosexuals. We are against anyone, anywhere, at any time, who executes homosexuals for being homosexual. We would hide them in our homes before we would allow that to happen. But we would preach at them while they were there.

The gay “movement” is part of a sexual revolution that has stripped sexuality of all moral significance for an entire generation. We cannot accept the physical prosecution of homosexuals and we cannot accept the proposal that homosexuality is either private or moral. Therefore, as Christians, we must wrestle with this human sin in order to preserve healthy, loving human sexuality for as many as possible. We must love the homosexual and preach to him. God must and will do the rest. We are content with our role.

Bradlee Dean accuses "liberals" of exploiting gays:

Most liberals do not care about homosexuals. They care only for the political strategy they can build around the gay community; a strategy directed at reducing the influence of Christianity on government generally. It is nothing but a will to power, not a will to health and well being for real people.

Bradlee Dean then flat-out denies he referred to the execution of gays as "more moral"

Using an excerpt from our radio show, taken out of context, to suggest that I have called for the execution of homosexuals is not accurate, nor is it correct. I was not affirming Islamic law. I was contrasting its excesses with the approach of Christianity which recognizes both the law and grace. I have never said that homosexuals should be subject to any kind of violence. I oppose exercising any kind of violence on them.

Bradlee Dean winds up indicating he is going to "take action":

The media has twisted my remarks so irresponsibly, without calling me for correction or comment, as any competent journalist would have done. Given this statement, it is clear that if any media source were to slander this ministry’s position, we will have to take action and will be likely to succeed with it.

Does "take action" mean a defamation lawsuit?

Will Bradlee Dean also "take action" against Exodus International and CAIR for condemning his anti-gay and anti-muslim statements?

Listen to Bradlee Dean show his love for "the homos" in this clip from late last year:

UPDATE: Max Sparber has a post about Bradlee Dean at MinnPost:

The old rule in publishing is that you never pick a fight with anybody who buys ink by the barrel, but who does that anymore? We need to update that expression, but how? Never pick a fight with somebody who buys bandwidth by the gigabit? Never pick a fight with somebody whose Google Analytics stats are highers than yours? Whatever the appropriate expression, Bradlee Dean of You Can Run But You Cannot Hide Intl. has decided to pick a fight with his media gadfly, Andy Birkey of Minnesota Independent.

If you’ve been following the story, the menacingly named You Can Run But You Cannot Hide Intl. is a Christian rock band that regularly tours schools with their jejune version of rock 'n' roll music and their Culture War Christianity (samples of both can be found on their website). Birkey has regularly been following them and reporting on their exploits, for which he recently won a Page One Award.

Washington Post Article on Bachmann

Article in WaPo about Bachmann's fear of the mainstream media:

Now she voiced frustration with what she regarded as the "media's focus" on her "language." She listened to a question about comments she had made regarding a federal program designed to expand the national number of community volunteers, a measure authored by the late Massachusetts senator and liberal lion Edward Kennedy and signed into law by President Obama. She was asked about her charge that the program would lead to political "reeducation camps" for its young participants.

Dead silence came over the telephone line.

After a while, it was time for the mainstream media's next question. "Are you there, Congresswoman?"

The silence lengthened.

"Are you there, Congresswoman?"

--snip--

Although she appears occasionally on CNN's "Larry King Live," these days she sticks closest to the shows of conservative commentators who effusively support her.

--snip--

No figure was more instrumental in Bachmann's early political success than Jason Lewis.

Yup, we remember...

Living Word Christian Center Throws Bradlee Dean Under the Bus

The Exodus International blog:

We just received the following statement from Living Word Christian Center (An Exodus Church Association Member) clarifying how they had once worked with Bradlee Dean of You Can Run But You Cannot Hide Ministries:

Statement Regarding You Can Run But You Cannot Hide Ministries

Living Word Christian Center (LWCC) did host You Can Run But You Cannot Hide Ministries on March 25, 2009 in our Senior High School Youth department. The speaker was Jacob MacAulay the chief operations manager of their ministry, his topic was on the influences of pop culture in our society. LWCC does not support financially or in any other manner, nor is an affiliate ministry of You Can Run But You Cannot Hide Ministries. Our faith community at LWCC believes it is the love of God who draws all men (people) to Him, not condemnation or judgment.

Will Bachmann follow the example of Pastor Mac and condemn Bradlee Dean's ministry of hate?

UPDATE: Minnesota Independent reports that the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) is calling on the MN GOP to speak out against Bradlee Dean:

Lori Saroya, head of the group’s Minnesota chapter, told the Minnesota Independent that CAIR-MN “strongly opposes any kind of violence or discrimination against any group,” and called on Minnesota Republicans to speak out against Dean’s statement.

“The YCR representative makes at least three outrageous and incorrect claims in the radio interview,” she stated in an email. “That ‘Muslims are calling for the executions of homosexuals in America,’ that executing homosexuals is ‘moral,’ and that Muslims are a ‘foreign enemy.’ Statements like this show the level of ignorance and bigotry that exists in our country.”

PZ Myers on Bachmann's Favorite Gay-Hating, Punk Preacher Bradlee Dean

PZ Myers:

This kook is so far out and so hateful that even Exodus International, the gay conversion ministry, has distanced itself from him. That takes some doing.

Who hasn't dumped him is just as telling: Michele Bachmann loves Bradlee and prays for him, and EdWatch praises him. EdWatch, by the way, is our local right wing group that would dearly love to get control of the Minnesota board of education…and if they should ever succeed, Minnesota would make Texas look like a beacon of the enlightenment.

Bachmann Listed in Program, but Did Not Attend Memorial Day Ceremony at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery

A comment from a reader:

I was at the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery. Michele Bachmann was listed on the program but I did not see her, nor was her presence acknowledged. Gov. Pawlenty and Sen. Klobuchar were there and spoke. Both have been there many times. Other dignitaries were there and noted. I have been going to the ceremony for decades and have yet to see Congresswoman Bachmann there. Why do you get put on the program and yet not attend? This is another example of Michele Bachman "mailing it in" for our MN troops. She has plenty of time for cable shows to promote herself. When does she start working for her constituents and not her self promotion. Michele Bachmann is not a friend of our proud sons and daughters of Minnesota serving in uniform.

Another reader, Betty comments:

No surprise. After a funeral for a local soldier killed in Iraq, Michele Bachmann and her entourage tried in vain to convince parking volunteers that they BELONGED near the beginning of the motorcade to the cemetary. The Bachmanns were not family friends. Just a grandstanding politician.

Typical. Veterans are just campaign props to Bachmann.

Will Minnesota Churches and Politicians Cut Ties to Bradlee Dean's Ministry of Hate?

As posted earlier, the pray-away-the-gay ministry Exodus International threw Bradlee Dean and his gay-hating ministry under the bus:

Using Old Testament scriptures to condemn a person to death is not “loving” … it is incomplete theology and powerfully irresponsible. To say that murderous actions are more “moral” than tolerating free will is to completely ignore that Jesus did not call for the deaths of sinners.

Uh, yeah... executing gays is not exactly "pro-life" is it?

We called our contacts in Minnesota and apparently Mr. Dean is somewhat known in Christian circles there. They have run into him a couple of times but have not appreciated his strident tone. They were as upset by his statements as we are. I would imagine he will be getting a few phone calls.

Oh, yeah?

Apparently, the Jesus People Church of Rogers, Minnesota is still sticking with Bradlee Dean - they are hosting YCRBYCH tonight. This is from their more recent newsletter (PDF):

Wednesday, June 2nd “You Can Run But You Cannot Hide”

This presentation will blow your mind. Bradlee Dean and his staff ministers to high school assemblies all around the country.

Bradlee is not afraid to talk about the controversial issues that many churches avoid. Come and hear the truth about our nation, sin and the coming judgment. The faint of heart need not apply

This un-nice preoccupation of an alarming number of Minnesota Christians with hating gays is attracting attention of Christians elsewhere.

But here in Minnesota, the silence of churches with ties to Bradlee Dean is deafening.

Ex-Gay Watch has a post today that mentions a few Exodus International-affiliated Minnesota "ministries" with close ties to Bradlee Dean; Living World Christian Center and Janet Boynes (both Janet Boynes and LWCC also have close ties to Bachmann). The LWCC's Driven Senior High has a notice of a 2009 event with Bradlee Dean.

The following is a letter of praise and support for Bradlee Dean from Minnesota Teen Challenge (I obscured the names of their "patients"):

Photobucket

There's more of letters from "ministries", but let's move on to the politicos....

Here is a letter from Bachmann's district office manager, Julie Quist.

Photobucket

Here's one from the Elk River Mayor Stephanie Klinzing:

Then there's Bachmann's fundraising and prayers for Bradlee Dean and Tom Emmer saying Bradlee Dean and his ministers of hate are "nice people".

... and Tim Pawlenty? Yes, Tim Pawlenty:

..and Rep. Mary Kiffmeyer;

Teaming with former Secretary of State Mary Kiffmeyer, YCRBYCH and Judge Roy Moore hope to bring about change in both the Church and the young adults of today.

Will the mainstream media in Minnesota continue to ignore this issue?

Reader Betty comments:

Mainstream media needs to get a clue. Bradlee Dean is not a minister and he does not run a ministry. He is an opportunistic phony using his false piety and revivalism to lure young children into a cult of hate and intolerance.

If anyone can wave a magic wand and call themselves a "minister" and receive special tax considerations from the federal, state and local governments then NO CHURCH SHOULD. By dispensing these special tax treatments our government is acknowledging and accepting and condoning the exclusionary beliefs and hateful tactics of something that would otherwise be labeled a hate group, like the KKK.

The first thing that needs to happen is to take away their 501(c)3 status. They are supporting candidates and political causes. If they have to start paying taxes, or have their contributions regulated under other tax structures then Bradlee Dean will be out of business. No one would go near him. There would be no "church" or "ministry" to hide behind. That's right Bradlee "you can run, but you can't hide" from the IRS.

Bachmann Calls Attorney General Holder a "Trial Lawyer"

Hart Van Denburg at the City Pages Blotter:

Michele Bachmann invoked the Charge of the Light Brigade, and epic British military failure, as a rallying cry for teabagger victory against health care reform.

She flubbed the history of the Slaughter Solution.

She got net neutrality exactly backwards.

Now, Bachmann has called the U.S. Attorney General a "trial lawyer."

Yes she did. Here.

President Obama has once again shown his lack of judgment, by sending Attorney General Eric Holder down to the Gulf of Mexico to investigate possible litigation. Clearly, the White House has misplaced priorities, instead of sending more engineers and experts, we are sending down trial lawyers to determine possible punitive damages. The President makes time in his daily schedule to appear regularly on television programs, yet his recent trip to Louisiana only lasted a handful of hours. Instead of concentrating on stemming the ongoing oil spill, the Obama administration is opening up a new gusher, full of litigation and trial lawyers. Is this the best President Obama can do to stop the oil spill?

The U.S. Attorney General is not a trial lawyer, he's the head of the DOJ and he enforces the law... duh!.

Will the vapid volcano of the 6CD ever cease gushing plumes of stupid?

Exodus International Throws Bradlee Dean and his Ministry of Hate Under the Bus

The repulsive ex-gay "ministry" Exodus International found Michele Bachmann's favorite long-haired, hard-rock preacher too odious even for them.

From the Exodus International blog:

I was alerted to Dr. Warren Throckmorton’s post about Bradlee Dean’s (pictured) public comments saying that Muslim countries who call for homosexuals to be killed are more “moral” than American Christians. I listened to the segment of Mr. Dean’s radio program and was shocked.

--snip--

Using Old Testament scriptures to condemn a person to death is not “loving” … it is incomplete theology and powerfully irresponsible. To say that murderous actions are more “moral” than tolerating free will is to completely ignore that Jesus did not call for the deaths of sinners. He died and paid the price for all of our sin, including those of us who have or do struggle with homosexuality. He paid that transcendent price and still left us with the free will to believe in Him or not. That’s what makes faith in Him authentic and not coerced.

Oh, right ... he's shocked, shocked that someone would take that short step from vilifying a minority to calling for the arrest, incarceration and execution of that minority.

I will have related post about this today - stay tuned.

Bachmann Demands Government Takeover in Response to Oil Spill

Think Progress:

Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN), a darling of the tea party movement and a loyal ally to House Republican leadership, is known for decrying almost every form of government action as socialism. Bachmann has denounced emergency loans to banks, student lending programs, health reform, and regulations as examples of “gangster” government and onerous government takeovers. “People don’t want the federal government to either own or control the private economy,” she said. But despite her opposition to government, Bachmann took to the floor of the House of Representatives on Friday afternoon to slam President Obama for lacking “competence” because he did not use the government to seize ships to deal with BP’s oil spill. “Where were the boats that could have been commandeered to be sent into this region to deal with the oil plume,” Bachmann thundered with characteristic disgust:

BACHMANN: The administration, they were hands off. They didn’t do anything. Where were the boats that could have been commandeered by the government to be sent into this region to deal with that oil plume as it was coming up in the water and destroying marine life? Nowhere to be found. Why? The administration was hands off on this policy.
